Arkona Nov 21st, 1916

Miss Madeline G. Lucas
New Liskeard Ontario

Dear Madeline,

Your welcome letter to hand glad you are well and having such a good time. Today is chilly and more comfortable inside than out. It snowed some last night but it nearly all gone. The autumn here has been fine and no rain until Friday. The roads are now muddy. I intended going home today but it is too disagreeable for comfort. I have not been home since you left but will go sometime soon. Harry and Rose were in here Friday Eve but did not see them. I was to a lecture in the Orange Hall and it was late and did not meet them.

Well Madeline you must be having a fine time when the time goes so fast. To me November has 30 days all told and this is only the 21st. I have been working quite steady and they tell me I am pretty ugly these days in the store. It would make anyone ugly working all the time. Lyda was in last night and seemed quite alive. her and I can’t make a go. She turned me down one night and that ended me. I have lots to tell about our adventures. All are well here in town. Mr Lucas got home 1 week today. They had a fine time and all got a deer. I expect you will have just as good a luck. Don’t ship by freight or express, Bring him with you.

Now I must tell you I intend leaving the store. I may stay until Xmas. Col Kelly was over to see me and as Lambton County is raising a Battalion, he wanted me to help. I expect to stay here until spring but if the boys don’t turn out I will be sent away. I will tell you all when you come home. You spoke about going to Detroit to be a nurse. When I read that I felt so bad I could kick anyone who persuades you to do the like. Please don’t consider or think about it. There are better places in Canada and you have lots of time yet if you should go. I only pray God will guide and bless you.

I must close my letter right quick and go to Church. Tonight will go to Methodist church next Sunday I hope you will be in Arkona. Now if you come home next Sunday I will go out and meet you if you will let me. I would be pleased to do so. If you should come Saturday phone the store and I will go and meet you. You write Lyda when you are coming home and I will see her before then. Hoping you will have a pleasant and safe journey home.

I remain

Yours sincerely, W.A. Williams
