Germany 17 — 1 — 19

My Dear Wife,

Your letter of 29th and was glad to get your weekly edition. Your letters are thankfully rec’d and would appreciate the daily editions. The letter contained a brief remark on Eileen’s temper and of course this being a serious matter will have to deal with it when I get home. Her daddy is the originator of it, but by good training could be improved. I see where the poor child comes in for a trimming if she is to be an angel. However will wait and see how bad she really is before giving threats Please have mercy on her until my return.

You said Mrs Fuller thinks she looks like me. That’s no much credit the child gets. I think Madeline the Grandmother better handle the baby, so she will be good like her Mother. This letter is written seriously and hope you see it that way. Your mind has gone back to Ann Arbor now. Who was the guy who went home with you? or what there any one (ha ha.) You will see since the Germans lost the war am mighty independent. Yes I am still over the Rhine and have seen all the large cities such as Bonn and Cologne and Coblenz. The opera in these cities are good and have so many things to see. My health is improving slowly but no need of being uneasy as will likely soon improve. the last four months of thawed nearly finished me and the boys are now enjoying a good well earned rest. I shall be glad to be relieved of my job as transport officer which will be very soon.

So Mr Brown is dead. What a sad time for that family indeed. I am so glad Don Sutherland saw Gordon Brown’s grave. I shall not likely be going back that way. The trip back will be so much easier for me and by train. I have no news of any kind and hope you know the difficulty I have in writing nowadays. We are really not busy but so tired of these people and the place.

Madeline try and write me often if you can settle your mind down to it. Remember you will be sorry for it when I tell you what we have gone through. At the present time it [is] all I can do to keep cheered and a short letter once a week doesn’t help a little bit.

Love and kisses to Eileen and yourself.

Your loving husband, Will xx

My Dear Wife,

Sometime has elapsed since I last wrote you. Have  been awful busy and much time has been spent moving. I am real well, and hope this finds you all in good health. Rec’d a parcel from you and a couple of letters. The articles were very much needed and were appreciated. Your letters were kind and cheerful. Had a nice letter from Mr Lucas and will answer it soon.

I have no news from any of the boys. Have been out of the line for a short rest, but it’s not much rest for me, as I have been attending the horse shows. I told you my winning 1st in the Div. Well I went to the Corps and showed against the best English and Scotch Bns. 18 entries and my outfit won 2nd. I shall never forget the day as it was such a surprise to me. I lost the 1st by a point and the General told me when presenting the blue ribbons I well deserved 1st. I rode a beautiful black and followed by six black hitch, 6 Brown hitch, 4 Bays, 4 Chestnuts, 2 Blacks and 2 Greys also a N.C.O. on a brown horse. We had to do some fancy driving and beat them all. Most of my drivers were the French Canadians and how pleased they were over winning. When I entered the driving ring thousands cheers at our grand turnout. It was a great honour to win in such a show. My Col. hasn’t stopped smiling yet. Madeline I feel pretty proud of it myself. Will send my blue ribbon home for a souvenir. Really I could write so much of my trip to the Corps show.

I had a letter from Alf and he had been sick with fever for a few days. A great many have been used up with it. I missed thus far.

You spoke of Eileen and of her company. I understand she is great company and a wonderful baby. What else could she be with such a grand mother. I suppose the next letter will be a sheet on blarney. You just tell me all about our girl. Madeline I have been so busy haven’t much time to think of those at home. I was 3 months in the line and not rest and only two weeks out and in we go. Here is some more times. Now I must close soon because my turn for sleep coming nigh.

Love and kisses to Eileen and yourself.

Your loving husband, Will xx
