My dear Wife,

Ret’d today a parcel containing a few dainties and cake. By the way the cake didn’t last long but nothing was wasted. Thousand thanks for same, but oh it’s all gone so soon.

Well Madeline everyone is tickled to death over any kind of cookery. I never loved cake as much in all my life, and especially when it comes from home.

I was awfully disappointed today, thinking Eileen’s pictures would be in the parcel I just picked it to pieces. No pictures at the cake for spite. I would give the world to see our wee girl. You asked me about coming home in the fall. I mean the war will soon end, and likely be coming home. About the war ending no one knows, but One and will end very soon if it be his wish. God does not wish it whatever, but the world keeps it running. Never be anxious about it. I am very confident, but absolutely powerless to save even oneself. We all mope along in darkness. We are going through a great change in the next few months. British are standing the test as they always have in days past. I only wish could hear from Alf more often.

Had a letter from B. Flake he is in Bighty with gas lungs. Bob McKee wrote Wyatt and said wished to be remembered to me. I will drop him a card right soon. You spoke of Torrington. Have no news of him for a long time. Millie Bates will have had some experience in recent raid, but likely she wouldn’t mind it. We all get used to the life more or less. Had a letter from Wes Phillips some days ago. He is well, and far back. I also receive many letters from Northwood, Williams, Bates and others. We live on letters over here. I hear from the people in England.

Well Madeline must close now. Best wishes to all.

Love and kisses to Yourself & Eileen.

Your loving husband, Will xx

My dear Wife,

Your letters of May 23rd and 27th record today. Also a parcel containing some eats and a nice new shirt. I thank you for them. I am not in need of anything so don’t worry over me wanting. The cake didn’t last long. All the officers helped themselves of course, we all fare the same.

I am not sure about my letters anymore, as my bean is swelled and forget. You saucy wife to tell me I am no longer shy or bashful.

17th.

Well Madeline I only go this far yesterday. Mr Omer and Brooks came to see me. They are both well. It was late when they left so had no time to finish this letter. I then went up the line and it was midnight getting in. I suppose they sent you work of my being wounded. Done my best to prevent it going to casualty list. However the deed is done, and likely have worried yourself to death. The wound is only slight but how she pains. My knee is badly swollen but only a slight cut. My horse has been killed and believe me I do feel bad over her. She was such a beauty. Everybody took such a fancy.

Well it’s been a lucky day if you only knew. I wish Fritz would keep his shells to himself. If I ever get a chance he will be sorry. When I go home will tell you my experience. I’m still on duty in this unit, but of little use for a few days. The gold stripe is a lovely decoration. It was not the one I wanted.

About Eileen, isn’t she a bouncer 15 1/2 lbs. Well good things are done up in small parcels. So Polley and Hilda parted again, good practice isn’t it? Why don’t some one tie them up solid. You said Oraval Augustine was home with his wife. What unit is he in or is he a conscript too.

Madeline you seem so touchy because some boys make such a fuss. Remember the fuss I made. Now I must close and go to dine. I shall write in a day or so and tell how am getting along. But for my sake don’t worry because it’s anything but serious.

Best wishes,
Love and kisses to Eileen and Yourself.

Your loving husband,
Will xx

My dear Wife,

Your letter of 19 and picture of Eileen record yesterday. The letter was a short one, but some news. Well that long looked for picture arrived and believe me I am certainly pleased. I think the baby is sweet as any child could be, not sure  because it’s our own. She sure is cute and real pretty. I am satisfied now that our little darling is much to be proud of. I am sure you must be happy with such a dear baby. I would just worship it if could only see her as she is.

Really Madeline it must be more of a doll than a baby. I think her hair will be auburn likely. The folks says she is the picture of me, but the Lucas will need some encouragement, so I think she will look somewhat like Lida. Don’t you think I had my way a lot in this case anyway? The next one will be yours and see your taste. When I get home the baby will be too big to see her tricks, likely hear the back talk and etc. Now the baby’s all yours, see what a fist you make in her bringing up.

Don’t let your passions rise as to cause spanking. I really think it’s a good thing I am away, because would be interfering. Madeline I can just picture you with that sweet little darling. You must be happy. I had all the pictures in a row on a board. the baby is the brightest by far. I say what I think of course, because am so far from home. Why I have been noted for blarney could never tell, but have been accused.

You will wonder how my knee is making out. It’s quite stiff of course but wasn’t I a sick kid all day yesterday. The dope they gave me was fierce. I walked outside for a few yards when a big shell came my way and Lord how it put my wind up. The dirt flew all over, but no shrapnel touched me. They don’t bother me quite so much now. I hope this dope won’t be worrying you, because it’s only now and again he gets a few our way. I wish you could see us scramble sometimes.

This is poor reading matter, but it’s all for now.

Best wishes to all. Love and kisses to yourself and Eileen. Yours, etc. Will xx
