Dear Madeline,

Your welcome letter rec’d to day. Hope you are well as the letter did not contain anything about your health. Please remember this is an important part of all letters addressed to me. I am real well and feel fit for the B.F. & P.T. [Bayonet Fighting and Physical Training]. All the boys are examined before going to this course to be sure they can stand it. We leave here for Stratford tomorrow afternoon. How is Lyda all smiles by now, tell her I would of give quite a kiss for Ethan’s address. Was Charlie very sick, we two seem to be delicate. Wait till I come back and then you will se some guy. Madeline, only babies cry when lonesome. I have been awful lonesome but stick like a brick. Yesterday was a quiet day and 3 pm went to hospital and had a real visit with Price. He is doing fine and will soon be out. Innes is O.K. and gets out tomorrow. He was pretty lonesome and glad to see me. Price was pleased with the cake and thanked you for it. After leaving this I went up town had supper at Wongs and then went to Church that was my first trip to the city. Today I had dinner with Mrs Smith, Lola & Uncle Chas Williams were there. I left here n noon returned 3 pm. Uncle Charlie came back with me and showed him around. Alf skinned out for the day. This is all the news as Mr Wyatt will tell you all. Did you rec’d those IOU? Or the check from Fred Nelson? How did your singing go at the church? Were you nervous? Must close. Tell me all the news address to Armouries, Stratford.

Your loving husband, Billie.

Miss Madeline Lucas

Dear Madeline,

Just a few lines. Am well, hope you are O.K. I am roosting up in the 3rd loft in the Roche House, quite alone and elevated. Some place Forest, never had an introduction to on gal yet. Will be back soon to Arkona. Was out to Indians today and brought in one, took train to Camlachie this afternoon and returned 6 P.M. Some town, believe me.

How is everything in the Ark, and how did Mr Kress fill the bill Wednesday evening. I hear Dan D. has signed up. Good for Dan. I suppose the people are glad I am gone away and if they are pleased perhaps I could stay away. However I will call and see my friends before long. Will not be home Sunday as you have company and would not look good. Please forgive these scribbled lines. Write me.

I remain Yours sincerely,

W.A. Williams, Lieut.

To Miss Madeline Lucas
Arkona, Ontario

Dear Madeline,

Just a few lines. Might glad to hear from you. That was a fine letter, such a nice assortment of Willies. May it please you to have a little mercy on me and forgive as duty kept me away on Sunday. I had to go with my friend Moses to the hospital, poor Moses has a bad does of pneumonia and will have a hard pull. I hope you had rec’d my message Sunday. Believe me, I was disappointed but if any thing happens [to] my poor Indian, I will feel I did my best. I called at Hospital at noon and he was so pleased to see me. Now I will break my neck to get to the Misses Lucas home next week, Sunday. I hope I will be welcome as ever and will try and tell all the news when I see you. Col Bradley says a man can’t recruit and go with girls so what will become of me. now write me if I can come down Sunday because I feel like a lemon in the middle of the ocean.

GoodBye for this time,

Will
