August 1918

France, 28/8/18

My dear Wife,

I have just found out this is Wednesday 28th. I wrote some days ago and dated them wrong.

I am well and getting along alright, only awfully busy. We are on the go day and night these days and the Hun knows it too.

Well, it’s raining some today and quite cool. Really it’s getting the appearance of autumn. The harvest is being gathered and is good. I have no news as the boys are all busy and no time to hunt them up. I am anxious to hear how they have made out. I heard Ed Smith was doing great as stretcher bearer and was a great soldier.

Now I must close as its useless to write these busy days. Remember me to all.

Love and kisses to Eileen and Yourself.

Your loving husband, Will xx

[Someone, perhaps Madeline, has written on the back of the envelope, in pencil, a list of household items: “cotton, yarn, boxes” and “C. cloth, dust pans, scrub brush, mop”]
